You''ll offend alot of snotty Brits with the very idea that you can discuss any such concept, Bill. It's an item of faith amongst many of the British that Americans can't grasp irony, let alone play with the idea.
Believing Americans have no concept of irony protects a great many folks over here from accepting that we've produced about 3 funny TV shows since the Millennium Bug didn't bite. We may not be hilarious, but we apparently know what irony is.
I know, I know. It's all I can do not to write 'There's an irony there'.
